The Physics of Controller 6-Axis IMU Motion Sensors
Modern motion-capable controllers (such as the Sony PS5 DualSense and Nintendo Switch Pro Controller) integrate 6-Degree-of-Freedom (6-DoF) Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs).
An IMU combines two distinct microscopic silicon sensor chips:
- 3-Axis MEMS Gyroscope: Measures angular rotational velocity (degrees per second,
°/s) around the X (Pitch), Y (Roll), and Z (Yaw) axes. - 3-Axis Accelerometer: Measures linear acceleration (including the downward
1.0gpull of Earth's gravity) to calculate absolute tilt elevation.
Flick Stick & Competitive Gyro Aiming
In competitive shooters (like Fortnite, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, and Splatoon 3), gyro aiming enables pixel-perfect crosshair micro-tracking. Under the "Flick Stick" layout, flicking the right analog stick turns the player instantly to that exact angular bearing, while all vertical and fine horizontal aiming is handled effortlessly by wrist motion.
