How to Fix Nintendo Switch Joy-Con (L / R) Stick Drift

Joy-Con drift is the most documented controller failure of the generation. The tiny ALPS modules wear fast; replacement modules are cheap and drop-in.

Step 1: Measure the exact drift

Run our Stick Drift Detector with each Joy-Con connected. Note which Joy-Con (L/R) drifts — drift can be one-sided.

Step 2: Clean the ALPS module

Pop the module open and flush 99% isopropyl alcohol into the sensor while rotating the stick. This temporarily revives many drifting Joy-Con sticks.

Step 3: Adjust in-game deadzones

As a stopgap, raise the in-game deadzone on Switch titles that expose it (e.g., Fortnite).

Step 4: Replace the module

Joy-Con stick modules are drop-in replacements (approx. $8–$15 each) with a ribbon cable; no soldering. If under warranty, use Nintendo's free Joy-Con drift repair program instead.

Step 5: Re-test the fix

Re-run the Stick Drift Detector. The replaced stick should read 0.0% at rest. Also test the ZL/ZR and SL/SR buttons while you are at it.

Verify your fix — Re-test now

Repairs only count when the measurement confirms them. Run the Stick Drift Detector again to confirm 0%–0.5% at rest, then log the result in your drift timeline.
